Chapter 11 - Ian

Ian woke up when Michaela stepped out of the shower with damp hair and a thick robe tied securely around her. Something wasn’t right. He knew it the minute he saw her face. Was she regretting last night? How could she? Making love to Michaela had been the most amazing experience. In his decades of existence, he had had his fair share of women, but no woman had even come close to making him feel what he had felt with Michaela. She was his soulmate. Nothing else explained the deep connection he had felt with her. His dragon had recognized her when they’d made love for the first time. Why else would he recognize her if she wasn’t his soulmate?

With his heart thudding in his chest, he sat up in bed and forced his lips to curve into a smile.

“Why didn’t you wake me up? I would have loved to wash your back,” he said lightly.

She tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace. And he could read the fear and panic in her eyes, which increased his sense of foreboding. What was she suddenly afraid of? Had his dragon surfaced in the throes of passion? He thought not, but he could come up with no other explanation.

“What’s the matter?” he walked to her, tried to put his hands on her shoulders, but she shrugged them away.

“Once you’ve showered, will you come down to the kitchen, please? We need to talk.”

He felt the air leave his lungs. His dragon, knowing what was to come, tried to break free. It was only with superhuman effort that he managed to subdue his dragon. Nodding mutely, he stepped into the shower.

When he went down to the kitchen, Michaela was already dressed. She was nursing a cup of coffee with such a forlorn expression on her face that he wanted to rush forward and take her into his arms, to comfort her. But he made himself walk to the table where she was sitting.

“Last night was wonderful. But it can’t happen again, Ian.”

“Michaela…”

“Please, please don’t make it more difficult than it needs to be. I can’t, Ian. We can’t.”

“Why?”

“Why?” she asked in a high-pitched voice. “We are competitors, Ian. I never mix business with pleasure. I have worked too damn hard to get here.”

Ian felt as if he had been slapped. Was that how she still saw him? Was he merely her competitor? Had she not felt the connection after all? Had he been wrong about her being his soulmate? Was he doomed to spend his life alone like his dad? The possibly had his gut tied up in knots.

Forcing himself to take a few deep breaths, he looked at her. Really looked at her.

Perhaps the fact that they were business competitors worried her, but it wasn’t all. There was something else she was not telling him. Maybe she simply needed time to come to terms with everything. But she hadn’t said she needed time; she said they could never do this again.
